Industry Experience before Consulting Career

by Kevin
(Cape Town, South Africa)

I am doing my honors in Organisational Psychology and am going to start working next year.

My question is: would it be better to go into a corporate environment for a couple of years to get 'Real-World' experience, or to try go straight into consulting once I finish my sudies?

Experience in Industry before Consulting
by: Richard

Hi Kevin
Great question, thank you.

In my experience (confirmed also by many in my network), you can't beat getting some tangible, 'Real-World' experience in a corporate environment - in a 'real' job, prior to moving in to Consulting.

A few years in an operational, management or 'line' role which is relevant to your specialism will put a solid foundation under any consulting career, and will give more credibility & weight to a CV.

Many successful consultants switch back and forth between roles 'client side' and pure consulting roles, maybe alternating every 4-5 years. This allows a consultant to see different perspectives and hone his or her skills.

Wishing you every success.
